1: Program Manager

Do you have the strategic vision, experience in private sector development and management skills to lead a program that is facing the challenge of transforming a key sector in Tanzania? Could you train and develop a team to innovate and nurture a range of alliances and intervention strategies to have a real impact on Tanzania’s commercial forestry sector?

The Forest Development Trust (FDT) is recruiting a program manager who will strengthen the team at the political, technical, economic and managerial levels. This role will provide strategic leadership and operational management in all program areas of the Trust to ensure successful implementation of EFS interventions while promoting strong industry collaboration.

The selected candidate will have extensive program management experience and should be a strategic thinker with good judgment, DNA from the private sector, and strong program programming skills. A very strong people manager will have excellent skills in coaching and communication and self-confidence. The experience and understanding of the commercial forestry sector would be an added benefit, but it is not essential.

The ideal candidate will have:

A minimum of ten years of relevant work experience, some at a higher level, and at least five years of management experience in Africa with a demonstrable understanding of smallholders.
A university degree in business, commerce, agriculture and/or forestry. Experience in forestry, investment and planning would be beneficial.
Strong experience in successfully managing and managing multi-stakeholder projects and multi-level teams, managing annual budgets of at least $ 1 million.
Experience in implementing market-oriented solutions in large sectoral development programs; and/or excellent strategic leadership and experience in managing interventions to improve the competitiveness of agricultural sectors.
Experience in working with SMEs, large corporations and investors/governments, including an understanding of investment decisions and structuring of investments.
Experience in leadership and human resource management, demonstrating the ability to put ideas into action, tracking multiple work processes, providing counselling and mentoring, and coordinating employees and partners involved in a takeover process. A collegiate and advisory decision.
A proven experience that influences senior decision-makers in the public and private sectors and communicates with various audiences and media.

Markets Interventions Manager

Do you have a strong mentality in the private sector, an understanding of market development and the willingness to design and implement solutions to market constraints? Do you want to contribute to a real change that creates jobs, increases income and benefits tens of thousands of people in the long term?

The Forest Development Trust (FDT) recruits a market intervention manager who joins the management team and directs the Markets of Trust component, which focuses on the part of the value chain that focuses on the sale and processing of trees, high-quality wood products.

The Forest Development Trust was established in 2013 by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation as an independent Tanzanian institution with a long-term vision for the development of the commercial forestry sector. The Trust wants to help the sector to improve the supply of high-quality wood products from sustainable energy while ensuring the long-term competitiveness of small-scale craft production and large-scale processing.

The successful candidate will help to define and shape the strategic direction; Monitoring the delivery of the implementation; provide leadership, mentoring and team building; and manage the resources of the component. You will manage the other members of the Market Components online and build strong working relationships with the strategy, monitoring and learning team and other components of the Trust. At the external level, the candidate will develop and strengthen relationships with a wide range of public and private actors, including through dialogue with the FDT Advisory Group.

The ideal candidate will have:

At least 8 years of relevant professional experience, including approaches to market systems and private sector development, private advice, corporate governance or high-level work in the private sector.
A qualification for higher education in economics, forestry, agriculture or trade.
Strong experience in leadership and human resource management with a focus on mentoring and human resources development.
Demonstrable ability to put ideas into action and monitor multiple workflows, with great experience in successfully managing a multidisciplinary team and consultant.
Comprehensive understanding and experience in developing mechanisms to address market constraints faced by private and public actors at all levels (small and medium-sized tree producers, public and private industrial forest enterprises, SME processors, tree producers) and industry associations).
Experience and understanding of investment decisions and business models of SMEs in dealing with parts of the value chain.
Experience in managing and implementing market-based solutions in large sectoral development programs; and/or experience managing measures to improve the competitiveness of the sector.
A proven experience that influences senior decision-makers in the public and private sectors and communicates with various audiences and media.
The experience and understanding of the commercial forestry sector would be an added benefit, but it is not essential. For forest engineers, it would be desirable to have experience in forestry planning, processing, investment and financing.
